Philly, DC or Toronto?

I'm certainly not saying it's impossible to get lost, I certainly
have.  But if you know that, say, the Black Cat is at 13th and S you
can logically find your way there from any other letter or number
street, without a map.

And as you mentioned, the Metro is decent for getting around the city.
 Taxis are also pretty good and readily available.  The only
goth/industrial night I've been to is Chiaroscuro (now defunct), and
like you said the people are pretty friendly and approachable.  I just
wish I lived closer to venues like the awesome Galaxy Hut, I'd be
there all the time.
