If you're old you recall me as the founding member of The Night Shift who did live mash-ups of your favorite songs. If you're really old you might remember me as Wandi's #8, if I recall correctly. The most goth cred I ever had was when I maintained Rosetta Stone's website, and on a whim used a credit card to finance a trip to England to follow them around on tour for a week. I got to drive in their van and hang out in their dressing room and stay in their hotel, and also see The Nefilim (touring at the same time) and hook up with a cute British goth girl. That incredibly irresponsible trip, over a decade ago, is finally getting paid off this year and with credit card interest rates cost me thousands of dollars. I should have bought stock in Google and Apple instead, but "no regrets!," as they say! The second most goth cred I ever had is when I booked the Cruxshadows to play in a store's attic on their first tour. About a dozen people came. I'm no Manny Theiner. Thanks to curmudgeonly old age and crippling social anxiety, most of my music consumption is now done with headphones on rather than in public areas. I play more video games than you, ride a scooter, and really like Doctor Who, so you might not think I'm much of a goth anymore. Since (unlike many people in the local scene) my interests swing wide into all sorts of underground, indie, avant-garde & experimental musics, you will find much that I do that may "cross over" into goth interests (like, say, an IDM or harsh noise show) but is not strictly goth or industrial per se. If you are interested in the live music and goth culture, and don't mind reguarly hyphenating goth with its apparent sister term "industrial", then there is no shortage of live performance to check out in the area. The most active promoters are myself and the dudes from Distortion Productions (Jim Semonik of Reinforced and his [acu]crack team] and we also work together to bring the heat. There are also other events as well - a fetish concert last week at the Rex with local bands Prometheus Burning and Agnes Wired for Sound was enjoyable as well. Last night, Slick Idiot played at Pegasus to about 60 people. So, unfortunately, even for prominent live bands, there is limited interest here. I think this is because a lot of the old people either stick to only DJ nights or just stay home out of Brian's aforementioned anxiety. And the younger kids get their info from Hot Topic, so they are more likely to show up at shows where there are screamo metalcore bands with makeup and autotune and crouching, or neo-Juggalo type groups (eg MSI), or maybe (if we're lucky) some band that gets its influences from the Dresden Dolls, and they don't really know anything about the history of either goth *or* industrial. Only maybe once or twice a year you might see 300 people in one place. That almost always means that VNV Nation, Combichrist, or Cruxshadows are in town. What I find interesting is that at this point, dark music has spun off into so many subcategories that it's particularly difficult to please a whole lot of people unless the band is already very well known. For example, the recent trend in the past several years of the Balkan bands (Gogol Bordello, Balkan Beatbox, etc) has a lot to recommend it to the dark-cabaret audience but the goths don't necessarily cross over into it. Circus-punkers World Inferno Friendship Society now has one of the two Dresden Dolls members as their drummer, but you don't see Dolls fans flocking to see WIFS here. Cliquey attitudes like that don't help open any minds. Anyway, we hope to see you soon at some live events. In a separate post, I will list some live event you may want to check out. -mt > Ey, My name is Sarah Spock, > Id venture to guess no one on this mailing list knows who I am. -mt Ey, My name is Sarah Spock, Id venture to guess no one on this mailing list knows who I am. I think the first gothy show I went to was Gossamer and Mindless Faith at the Beehive in the early autumn of 1997 - just turned 16 :) From then on, I was in PGH about once or twice a month for G/I clubnights and shows (traveling from Indiana County). I lived in PGH at The Shady House in 2001-2002, then moved back to Indiana PA to finish up my undergrad. Had a radio show on Pitt's station in 2002 and IUP's station 2003 and 2004 I think. Sang with a couple spooky projects. I live in PGH again (since 6/2007). I don't go out much these days, but every once in a while, I'll go to a show (gonna see Diamanda next week!) or show up at a spooky music dj night. I think I should get out a little more, but I am turning a little bit reclusive and smoky places give me a headache and I really have to be in the mood to get dolled up. But yeah. Present! Does that mean my goth cred is being one of those dozen people? Hi, I'm old. I used to be really prolific on this list, but not so much now. I still own the domain pghgoth.com, though it's been dead for a while due to various factors involving time, hosting, and other assorted problems related to getting old. Right now I'm wearing brown and green. Mint green, even. With spots of baby blue and salmon! So not goth! However, I still do try to show up to shows occasionally (last goth one I got to was Project Pitchfork in Philly; I do plan on going to The Damned in a few weeks.) Though, many of the shows I attend these days are more diverse (best concert recently was The Decemberists, actually!) I do still wear a lot of black, though as stated above, not as religiously. I also still listen to goth/industrial podcasts: Real Synthetic Audio and ReGen Magazine. I even occasionally privately DJ stuff (just helped with a wedding a couple weekends ago.) But mostly I'm really really overly busy with my day job (Technical Support Engineer for Ventyx, Inc downtown) and the two choirs I'm in (ELPC Chancel Choir and Renaissance City Choir), and sometimes some other projects on the side. I also like doing stuff with Hack Pittsburgh too. Oh, and I'm trying to plan a wedding for myself for next year. So, if you don't see me around, you know why. I am quite frequently found, especially during the day, on the IRC channel. Yes, we still have that IRC channel! irc.pghgoth.com #pghgoth of course! -- Gwendolyn R. I am also the creator/dj behind Halcyon, a FREE monthly downtempo/trip-hop/electronica night held at the Z:Lounge (upstairs) the 3rd Friday of every month. I am proud to say I've kept it going for 2 1/2 years now. We have a Facebook group that reflects schedule updates and events: http://tinyurl.com/y8kp2bd and a MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/halcyonpgh Additionally, I spin (along with several other diverse djs) at Super Secret Dance Party (SSDP), which is a fun little dance party at The Smiling Moose every Saturday night. We typically play a broad range of new wave, post-punk, alternative, pop & indie dance music with a smattering of goth/industrial for good measure. Definitely not a night for genre snobs; nor militant non-smokers (the Moose is smoker friendly). SSDP is also FREE. We also have a FB group that reflects schedule updates and events: http://tinyurl.com/y9mwl2p and a MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/supersecretdanceparty Due to all sorts of grown-up responsibilities and my involvement with the events mentioned above, I'm not able to support other events and shows as much as I would like to these days. But I am glad to see so many people still doing things, or at the very least, trying to. Even though Pittsburgh is not a bustling mega-metropolis, there ARE still cool things *always* going on and I want to lovingly punch people in the throat who claim otherwise. :) Some info might need to be updated on here a bit, but I created this handy map a while ago that highlights various merchants, bars and events in the Pittsburgh area that may be of interest to the gothically inclined: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=111689695720494572798.00044d1c7631a23fbab37&t=h&z=12 Keep on truckin', Pgh-goth-list. ;) --Tara On Oct 6, 2009 9:55am, gwen wrote: > On Fri, Oct 2, 2009 at 11:10 AM, Brian J. I joined about ten years ago, when I was planning my move to Pgh for a year of grad school in Costume Design. Seemed like a good idea at the time, wound up being a massive, horrific coil of suck, broken hearts, and Lifetime movie fodder. I used to go to Laga, but not even that very often. Left Pgh, moved home to Philly, and opened my own business-- I now make custom corsets, costumes, and specialty wedding gowns. I still identify as Goth, and probably always will. Just not solely Goth. Oh, and I still pause to think WWBD? when sucked into an online flamefest, cos Brian's always been rather adept at keeping his head. I do spend a lot of time behind my computer, but do not fit the profile of being depressed or having social phobia! Chad and I are usually out attending events almost every week here in PDX such as; festivals, art shows, concerts, beer & wine tastings, antique shows, expo's, eating curry etc. We are friendly, and sometimes shy. I enjoy to keeping up with old friends and what musical acts are coming into Pittsburgh. My current playlist features such acts as: Grouper, The Silent Section, Bat for Lashes, and White Lies. Lawrenceville is in the middle of the hippest area of town. The show was announced in plenty of other locations through listings, flyering and internet resources such as the NTMTO board. e.g. http://www.nevertellmetheodds.org/t.php?id=91776 I also passed out about 500 handbills at the Girl Talk show that night (which was attended by 4000+). The L&C/Caroline show could not have been scheduled earlier than midnight, what would have been the point in going up against Girl Talk? Plus I wanted to go to the Girl Talk show anyway. So I had to do what I had to do. Anyhow all this explanation is useless. The point I was making is that someone on Lisa's short list of new artists did play here recently, and that nobody went. I'm still here! I'm in high school, and have no illustrious background like everybody else. I like music, and people. I feel slightly inadequate having no response anywhere near paralleling everybody else's "I was in these five bands and have these four degrees", but I've still got time, and maybe some day I can be on that end of this spectrum. I am currently seeking a venue to which I would be able to wear an Empire-waist red gown that I bought and fixed up a little without thinking through that it's a little pointless to have a tailored former-thrift-store dress with no purpose, but that's about the only interesting thing I have going on aside from college applications (and my girlfriend, who is sitting next to me reading over my shoulder about to pout that she didn't make it in). I do tweet, however, I tweet in full sentences, and even use real words. The character limit is nowhere near as bad as you might think, Eric, and it's beneficial to your writing skills to be able to abridge sometimes ;) So, basically, hi! I'm not gone, nor do I intend to become so any time soon. ~Maggie From ageoldone at yahoo.com Thu Oct 8 21:10:11 2009 From: ageoldone at yahoo.com (Adrian Zeglin) Date: Thu, 8 Oct 2009 18:10:11 -0700 (PDT) Subject: roll call Message-ID: <76823.978.qm@web62408.mail.re1.yahoo.com> Having only joined 6 weeks ago or so, I am probably the newest here - although the oldest of age. I started into the scene when a friend introduced me to alternative in the 1980s and knew that it would be the music of choice for life, that being sais, i listen to and enjoy all music. My club scene started in the Glory Days of Metropol and Rosebud. Attending many concerts. KMFDM, My life with TKK, Lords, etc. My friend moved to Chicago and I moved more to the Goth music. I got to see Mace and Low Sunday Ghost Machine in the beginnings and have been to some of the first fetish balls in Laga. I was at the Upstage in the days of Ministry...seems long ago. I fell out of the scene because of age and distance-work can drag you down. But I still try to get to Pittsburgh whenever possible. I went to Reined Force, Aethestic Perfection, and Combichrist. Pissed I missed Psyclon 9. As I stated I was in Brasil-which was a very cool country to visit if you enjoy a good adventure. I have all over the US including and hawaii-great surf-little goth and alaska-all goth and no surf. It was dark 20 hours a day. So here i am in Pittsburgh and enjoy what mediocre culture we can hold onto. I went a few times to the Pegasus but the crowd had long since vanished and became too young for me. I mean no offense. At 40, I have seen much and done much-I am mellower now and not needing to dress the part-I just want to have a beer and listen to f'in great music. Am I asking too much for Pittbsurgh. PLease help the suburbs find the venues-we are here and walking in the dark sometimes. Pgh protogoth Norm Veenstra) Oct 24 @ Most Wanted Message-ID: <50755.70.20.65.134.1255640283.squirrel@webmail1.pair.com> Hey goth kids: D.C. instrumental-rockers TONE have been on labels owned by Neurosis, Fugazi and Savage Republic. Tone's founding guitarist Norm Veenstra used to live in Pittsburgh. He and I co-promoted the first-ever show in Pittsburgh billed as "an evening of dark gothic rock" (Of A Mesh = Slave Cave + The Garden in Jan 1988 at CMU). He had a show for several years on WRCT which I think was initially called "Storm Front" but later on was called "Dark Rock" or something similar. He founded a promotion company called Stormfront Productions which from 1988-91 brought dozens of great shows to Pittsburgh, some in collaboration with myself, including Wolfgang Press, Young Gods, Savage Republic, Government Issue, and Crime & the City Solution. With the help of CMU AB, he presented "Winterblast", a 1989 concert at CMU which featured Naked Raygun, Live Skull, and Bitch Magnet, which drew 500 people. After Norm left Pittsburgh in 1991, he passed on his productions to Greg Panchisin (it became MB Productions, which brought such acts to the Upstage as Helmet & KMFDM) which lasted another couple years. Meanwhile, Norm became the night manager of the 9:30 Club in D.C., a position he held for well over a decade, until recently leaving the venue to work in real estate. Over that time, he formed the guitar army Tone and released five albums, including the newest one "Solidarity" on Neurot. The band is heavily influenced by his love for the music of Savage Republic, Glenn Branca, and Sonic Youth among many others. So, if you're interested in meeting the guy who co-founded and nurtured the Pittsburgh goth scene for years before you were around, come to this venue at this time and date. Hope to see you there! Sat Oct 24 8 pm all ages $7 (byob is cool) Most Wanted Fine Art, 5015 Penn Ave, Garfield five-guitar instrumental postrock army on Neurot / Dischord / Independent Project TONE http://www.myspace.com/tonedc There has been music from Tone over the past few years - it's true. But it's clear to anyone who follows this Washington D.C. group and will be obvious to all that are introduced to Tone through Solidarity that this is the work that matters. You need not trace this all-instrumental band back through time to its source in order to know Tone. Jump into the sound the band is creating now, at this artistic moment, and revel in it. Then imagine each track played with masterful control and touch, amplified and impressively recorded by the mighty J. Robbins (Against Me!, Clutch, Murder By Death). Tone now find their recordings subject to an unexpected axiom - the law of entropy. The band is moving from a more ordered to a less ordered state with every record. This is not to suggest the band has lost skill or focus, but rather that they use their knack for cacophony to cover a greater breadth, expanding the current roster to include five guitars, one bass, and two drummers. Tone's ever widening orbit around the riff has allowed the songs on Solidarity to carry even more emotional weight than 2003's Ambient Metals (Dischord), which staked a claim to sonic territory along side those with whom Tone so often share a stage: Mono, Explosions In The Sky, Tulsa Drone, Do Make Say Think, Maserati, and godspeedyou!blackemperor. instrumental rock from Los Angeles on Mylene Sheath BEWARE OF SAFETY http://www.myspace.com/bewareofsafety Beware of Safety is an LA-based ambient/psychedelic band on The Mylene Sheath label. Their instrumental album Dogs is a trance meditation that blends wondrous resonant influences -- a pinch of prime Pink Floyd, a dose of Doors, the blooming dignity and bursting explosions of Sigur Ros. The result is a swelling sonic landscape both sweeping and dramatic. Swirling guitars, light and shade, whispers to screams, murder in the cathedral...it's all in the mystery code. with special guests Claire With The Turban From gwenix at gmail.com Mon Oct 19 14:45:29 2009 From: gwenix at gmail.com (gwen) Date: Mon, 19 Oct 2009 14:45:29 -0400 Subject: Roll Call In-Reply-To: <50010.70.17.184.247.1255034554.squirrel@webmail5.pair.com> References: <49929.70.17.184.247.1255031791.squirrel@webmail5.pair.com> <50010.70.17.184.247.1255034554.squirrel@webmail5.pair.com> Message-ID: On Thu, Oct 8, 2009 at 4:42 PM, wrote: > > Lawrenceville is in the middle of the hippest area of town. Message-ID: Hack Pittsburgh (http://www.hackpittsburgh.org/) is a non-profit, community-based workshop that allows members to come together and share skills & tools to pursue creative projects. Our membership is open to everyone but typically comprises inventors, engineers, scientists, programmers, hobbyists, artists, roboteers, families, entrepreneurs, and arts and crafts enthusiasts. Our focus is on collaboration, education, and community outreach. We?re a benevolent group and do not promote or condone illegal activities. The term ?hacking? is used in a benign sense, in the context of deconstructing and understanding objects and systems and re-purposing existing materials for new and innovative uses. In other words, we make stuff. It's a lot of fun. So, we're having this Hacky Halloween party on October 28th at the Brillobox, starting at 8pm. It's $5 at the door, and there'll be a DIY costume contest, concert, and other stuff going on all night. Plus, I'll be DJing at some point (TBD when, but it'll likely be earlier in the evening). I won't be *heavy* on the goth, I'm going to concentrate more on 80s and modern alternative hits (AFI, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc); but you know I'm going to break out some rendition of "Every Day is Halloween"! Back then I was so excited to hear "different from the mainstream" music coming from the airwaves. I have not been to Sanctuary Radio in a long, long, time. I think I lost interest at a time when they were having "issues" with their site. Good luck on your wedding planning. Are you getting married in Pittsburgh? Do you have all your vendors lined up? My advice would be to try parking off the river side of Carson, as opposed to off the mountain side of Carson. You can also sometimes find parking on 18th right before the intersection of 18th and Josephine, if you don't mind a bit of a walk. All that being said, there really isn't a completely Goth/Industrial night on the South Side. The Smiling Moose does spin some on Saturdays at the Super Secret Dance Party, and I think on Sundays as well, though I could be wrong on that. Remedy in Lawrenceville does host a once-a-month Goth/Industrial event called The Hanging Garden. And then there are the various concerts in town, both touring acts and local. The venues for those range all over the city (and unfortunately, outside - one booking company seems to think that Cheswick counts as Pittsburgh). And right now those are the most regular Goth/Industrial-related events happening in Pittsburgh. It's rare that I've gone two weeks without going to a show of late.
