Manny, these are the kinds of shows that--alongside the dark,
experimental stuff--I really, really miss!  Kudos for bringing acts like
this around.  If it were a smoke-free venue, I would definitely broach the unlikely topic of asking off work.  With longer notice... maybe next time?

Subject: Cult of Youth - NYC postpunk/neo-folk - this Thursday August 4 at 31st St Pub

If you are still part of the Pittsburgh goth-industrial scene after all
this time, then you know where the 31st Street Pub is.

It's
the venue that the remainder of the scene has coalesced around, thanks
to Jim Semonik's amazing streak of great goth/industrial shows. His
herculean efforts will continue there unabated.

Now all you need to do is find out who Cult of Youth is, so you can
come and see them this Thursday there.

Here's the raw info:

Who are Cult of Youth? Strictly put, they are a New York City band who are part of the newer scene of "dark music" in that city.
They incorporate equal elements of postpunk (Joy Division, earlier
Death in June) with dark neo-folk (later Death in June, etc)
and
throw in some other influences such as Turkish psych. If you check out
their Myspace, you will see that they've already played shows with
industrial legends such as Non (Boyd Rice).

The frontman of the
group was the leader of former K Records band Love as Laughter. But
don't let that throw you, because their current associations are more
important. Firstly, their debut record was released by Dais Records, an
American label that can be seen as the US equivalent of a World Serpent
or a Tesco.
Dais is known primarly for two things: putting out the
first 7-inch by famed NYC dark synth-rockers Cold Cave (who since signed
to Matador, and played the Brillobox to a packed crowd several months
ago), and putting out an album by Coum Transmissions - the pre-Throbbing
Gristle performance art group which involved Genesis P-Orridge.

Then,
Cult of Youth's full album came out on Sacred Bones Records. Sacred
Bones, with its easily recognizable logo of the Ouroboros around a black
triangle,  is considered a very hip new label that issues mostly new
postpunk and garage lo-fi bands. It's part of a klatch of very personal
boutique labels all run by associates of the Brooklyn-based Academy
Records store - the other labels are Minimal Wave, Dark Entries, and
Wierd Records. All of these labels do new and reissued releases of
coldwave, synthwave and dark rock/postpunk bands. You won't
find
information about these labels in goth-industrial stores because,
frankly, the G/I scene isn't clued-in enough to know about them, and
most of the records come out on vinyl only. Instead you will find these
fantastic releases at knowledgeable indie stores such as Polish Hill's
own Mind Cure Records (which is where I bought my Bleasure Grave and
Martial Canterel records, among others).

So, anyway, Cult of
Youth is great postpunk/neo-folk, so if you like stuff like Joy Division
and Death in June you will be in for a treat. And they are way cool by
association. Win win. Hope to see you on Thursday at the Pub!
