Summer reading...

Not reading these currently because I have too much on my plate, but still stuff I always recommend to people who ask...

Brite, Poppy Z. Drawing Blood. [Still my favourite love story.]

Combs, Alan & Holland, Mark. Synchronicity: Science, Myth & the Trickster. [From Carl Jung to Wolfgang Pauli... explores the intersection of physics, psychology and quantum theory a la Joseph Campbell.]
Dick, Philip K. Martian Timeslip. [Quick afternoon read that's also a great introduction to PKD's style.] or VALIS. [Watch your own mind begin to unravel as it tries to wrap itself around the ravings of a lunatic. Not an easy book to get through, but it will probably introduce you to some new thoughtforms, along with an introduction to gnosticism. Not recommended for the psychologically-unstable.]
Golding, Wm. The Lord of the Flies. [Write notes in the margins and send your copy to the White House when you've finished reading.]
Hall, Manley P. The Secret Teachings of All Ages. [If you can find a copy of this book to hold in your hand long enough to read it, then you are one of the priviledged few! Only published a handful of times with either 250 or 500 copies at each pressing, this omnibus is packed full of the teachings from Western occult texts and published by the Philosophical Research Society. Lots of fabulous full-color plates. If your local Masonic Lodge has an open reading room, you may be able to find it there. Hall died in August 1990 with hundreds of titles to his (and his team of researchers') credit.]
Heinlein, Robert A. Stranger in a Strange Land. [Get the un-cut version, re/released in the mid-90s! Includes the entire intellectual discourses between some very poignant characters that was originally edited out for "pulp fiction" readers.]
Morrison, Grant. The Invisibles. [A seven-volume graphic series that was written in "real time" over the course of the early nineties, incorporating many elements from the world news into the grand conspiracy theory that emerges as the plot drives on. This non-linear storyline was so convoluted and rich with sub/cultural references that the readers began an online forum for annotations. The panel-by-panel annotations were then published by Disinfo.com under the title Anarchy for the Masses: The Disinformation Guide to The Invisibles. (Do yourself a favor: do not read the cliff-notes first!) And you thought Art Bell was quirky!]
Peat, F.David. Synchronicity: The Bridge Between Matter and Mind. [Put on the same-named album by The Police while you're at it... A slightly different approach than Alan Combs to the same material. Whereas Combs uses Campbell's anthropological approach, Peat uses more scientific methodology, dipping his toes in quantum theory along the way.]
Steiner, Rudolf. Theosophy or Knowledge of the Higher Worlds and Its Attainment. [Discusses the basic tenets of Theosophy, written by one of it's founding members. Whether you're into the spiritual/religious aspect of the works or not, it's still an excellent window into the mind of 19th-century philosophical thinking and social responsibility.]
Wolfe, Fred Alan. Parallel Universes. [A quantum physicist's take on time travel and extradimensional possibilities.]

Not completely well-rounded, but a good mix of available material. Happy reading... ~sc'eric
