Chill out man...

I'd like to throw in that in Pittsburgh, most regular dance-oriented
nights aren't rented by promoters; the venue instead pays DJs some
kind of salary. Live music events are usually rented by promoters.

This is NOT how it happens everywhere. Different cities tend to have
a "culture" where venues tend to run vs. rent consistently.

I also think you don't see chill out rooms because of numbers.
Because there's an "everybody's a DJ" mentality in our scene, and
we're um uh a little drama-prone, club nights will tend to multiply up
to the point where the potential audience can no longer be further
fractured. Even in very large cities, regular events usually aren't
large enough that you could have both an "industrial dance" and
"industrial chill-out" room. If there are multiple rooms available,
the audience (read: profit) is usually maximized by the extra rooms
having somewhat different genres; most of what I've seen are goth
rooms or industrial rooms be side rooms with the main area being 80's
or some mainstream genre.

Where I live, in fact, there are no venues at all with multiple rooms. (There was never any industry here, so there are no leftover warehouses or buildings designed with large opens spaces.) Example: if a venue rents you the space, they're gonna still worry about whether they're losing "regular customers" (in all senses of the word) to cater to a "bunch of freaks". Happens here, must happen in other places too.

Squaremeter, Boards of Canada, Camanecroszcope... and maybe some non-rhythmic powernoise just to keep it interesting. If ravers can have them, why not rivetheads? Why not have a space set aside to NOT DANCE, so us non-dancing heathens won't be cluttering the perimeter of your dancefloor? (O.o) No, I'm really being serious.

I have very little experience running clubs, but the club owners we dealt with `were always: "You have money, yes? You would like to rent space, yes? Ok, we rent to you!" Maybe the minimums were more than we could afford, but as long as they got paid there wasn't a need to "convince" anyone to rent to us.
