As a side note, in some cities, it is common practice to ask people
paying cover for a show which band they're there to see.  The people
at the door keep track of how many people came for each band, and they
are paid accordingly.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, just that the ideas of how to handle
compensating entertainment are fluid.
